This course is for Honours students
This course provides an introduction into research methods relevant to Earth Sciences through a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Students learn how to conduct and present research as well as conducting a thorough literature review for their own research project that they will undertake in EMSC4005 or EMSC4008.

- Understand the principle features of a successful proposal;
- Apply concepts from lectures on "research methods" to their research proposal;
- Develop research questions and propose a feasible methodology for their project, presented as a substantive written research proposal;
- Critically review relevant literature and contextualise the research aims and methods; and
Communicate and debate research work to a peer audience
Indicative Assessment
- Research proposal containing a critical review of relevant literature, contextualizing the student's research aims and methods, and a budget (50% LO 1-4)
- A 15-minute seminar including question time on the The history of their Scientific Discipline (10% LO 4-5)
- A 3-minute seminar based on their Research Project (10% LO 1-5)
- Prepare a media article based on their Research Project (10% LO 1-5)
- A 15-minute Introductory Seminar including question time based on their Research Project and proposal(15% LO 1-5)
- Course Participation based on participation during discussions and questions time during class seminars throughout the semester (5% LO 5)

Workload
Workload includes attendance at lectures (total of 15 hours), seminars and tutorials (total of 15 hours) and substantial reading and preparation work (total of 20 hours) required for engagement in seminar sessions.Requisite and Incompatibility
