The course introduces students to contemporary Southeast Asia by focusing on case studies from southern Vietnam. The emphasis is on integrating formal learning with first-hand research experience. The in-country work will include fieldtrips, homestays, language training, as well as formal classes given by staff from ANU and from An Giang University (Mekong Delta).

The course focuses on experiencing and understanding the complex relationships between development and the environment as seen through every day living. Students will have the opportunity to conduct group and individual research project on issues such as the changing nature of rural lives, the relationship between the modern and traditional cultural practices, rural-urban migration, concepts of human well-being, and the social and environmental impacts of tourism. The focus is on the impact of rapid change on the environment, culture, family structure and on specific groups such as villagers, migrants, farmers and women.

Cost: The cost of the field trip is approximately $1200 plus airfares and personal spending. The cost of the field trip will be charged directly to students.

Indicative Assessment

1.       Reading quiz  (LO 1) (10%)

2.       Survival language quiz (LOs 1,2) (10%)

3.       Reflective learning journal or portfolio due at the completion of the Field School (LO 2) (40%).

4.       Group research project presented at the end of the field school (LOs 3,4) (40%)

As well as the above-mentioned assessments, students enrolled in the 12 unit option must complete an independent research project (3000-5000 words) that includes a seminar presenting preliminary findings. The research report is due by the end of Semester 1 teaching break and is 50% of total marks. 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

The Field School will be at least 21 days in Vietnam during January 2017. Entry and exit from the country will likely be Ho Chi Minh City. Students must make their own travel arrangements to and from Vietnam. Note that the running of the course is subject to DFAT Travel Advice. 

Requisite and Incompatibility

You are not able to enrol in this course if you have completed ENVS2017.

You will need to contact the Fenner School of Environment and Society to request a permission code to enrol in this course.
