This course is designed to help students develop the necessary skills to improve their pronunciation and understanding of spoken French. It combines an examination of how French sounds are produced and how they differ from English sounds, with practical exercises in oral practice, sound discrimination, and phonetic transcription. In addition to improving their general fluency and oral accuracy, students will also increase their knowledge of Francophone culture and gain an understanding of pronunciation differences between language registers and dialects/regional accents. By the end of the course, students will be familiarized with the rules of correspondence between sounds and spelling, as well as the rules governing other phenomena, such as intonation, stress placement, liaisons, and schwa.

- Articulate near-native French pronunciation, including
sounds, intonation, and liaisons
- Integrate phonological awareness of how the sounds of French
are produced and how they differ from their native language.
- Recognize and describe differences between oral and
written French, language registers, and regional accents
- Reflect in depth on the relationship between French
orthography and pronunciation
- Engage with available technology/software for speech recording and analysis
- Develop a research proposal based on scholarly
Written exams (x2, 50 minutes, in French) (10% each, for a total of 20%) (LO 2, 3, 4)
Pronunciation recordings (6 recordings, approx. 5 minutes each in French)(5% each, for a total of 30%) (LO 1-5)
Weekly homework and preparation (reading, transcription, questions) (10 preparations by 2% each, for a total of 20%) (LO 1-5)
In-class oral project (approx. 5 minutes, in French)(video-recorded) 15% (LO 1-5)
Research proposal on some area related to French pronunciation or phonetics (approx. 1000 words in French) 15% (LO 1-6)
