Languages are complex systems. For each subsystem, researchers have developed different theories of how the subsystem is internally structured and how it interacts with other parts of the system.  Students will employ and evaluate frameworks for analysing the complexities of a subsytem of the language system, and will set this in the context of particular theories of language.

  1. Demonstrate broad knowledge of a subsystem of language, including an understanding of background and evaluation of current literature.
  2. Demonstrate skills in analysis of the subsystem,  comparing and discriminate between analytical practice with respect to different theories.
  3. Demonstrate ability to undertake guided research on an aspect of the subsystem.

Indicative Assessment

Critical summary of reading: 1500 words 25%  (LO 1)

Data collection and analysis: 1000 words 20%  (LO 2)

Final research project: 3000 words 55%  (LO 3)

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 36 hours of lectures; b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of Arts Honours (HARTS or HART2) , Bachelor of Languages Honours (HLANG) or Bachelor of Asian Studies Honours (HASIA), or completion of 144 units towards the Bachelor of Philosophy (Arts) (APHAR or APNAR).
