Violence motivated by religion, or using religion as a justification, is on the rise around the world. Conflicts such as those in Iraq and Syria and more recently in Egypt, which began as inter-state conflict or popular internal uprisings have subsequently developed into sectarian conflicts. They appear, and are qualitatively and quantitatively different to earlier religio-nationalist conflicts such as the Irish Troubles. This course examines the causes and dynamics of religious and sectarian violence, as well as the factors that cause it to spread between societies.
