Philosophy deals with the most important questions that we can ask. Its subject matter includes ethics, knowledge, belief and existence. This course will give students an understanding of the main questions and issues of philosophy, and the ideas of the major Western philosophers. It also encourages students to clarify and refine their own ideas.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. To provide sufficient conceptual and analytical skills for students to undertake further university-level courses.

2. To teach the basic subject matter of philosophy.

3. To introduce the ideas of major Western philosophers.

4. To encourage students to clarify and refine their own beliefs.

Indicative Assessment

To be negotiated with students. Assessment will consist of three progressively longer pieces of written work which are due at specified stages throughout the course.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.
