The shift of economic and political power to the Asia-Pacific region is transforming the global media landscape. New technologies are revolutionising audience expectations and creating opportunities for pioneering digital initiatives. In this practicum course, students will develop and edit Monsoon, an Asia-Pacific focused online magazine, under the supervision of experienced academic editors. The student team will learn how to manage a dynamic editorial environment, harnessing the creative and participatory possibilities of today's Internet. The course will encourage critical reflection on the interlocking logistical, ethical, cultural and political considerations faced by editors on a daily basis. The course will prepare students for careers in the rapidly evolving media spaces that are opening up between traditional academic and journalistic content production.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:1. Identify and explain current trends in digital media, and describe how they apply to academic knowledge production.
2. Analyse audience requirements in the Asia-Pacific's rapidly changing online media environment.
3. Define a role within a dynamic online magazine that offers opportunities to work collaboratively at the cutting-edge of digital media production.
4. Design and apply creative solutions to ensure the successful editorial operations of an online magazine.
5. Produce Asia-Pacific focused content that can appeal to both academic and popular audiences in Australia and around the world.
6. Critically evaluate the success of digital media activities with suggestions for the continuous improvement of such collaborative undertakings.
7. Develop transferable skills in writing, sub-editing, editing and multimedia content production as well as the promotion of academic research and critical ideas across digital platforms.
Indicative Assessment
For each 6-units of enrollment in the practicum, the indicative assessment will be:
1. A 1000-word audience strategy to inform Monsoon's content focused on one aspect of the Asia-Pacific region [LO1, 2];
2. Five substantial contributions to the content of Monsoon (up to 3000 words, or equivalent) that explore the student's own interests related to the Asia-Pacific region (40%) [LO1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7];
3. A 1000-word critical review of the performance of some aspect of Monsoon that deals with design, format, audience engagement, academic quality, and proposed improvements (30%) [LO1, 2, 6, 7].
4. A reflective report on the student's performance during the practicum followed with a meeting with the course convener to discuss the student's development and experience of the course (20%) [All LOs].
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
Students in this practicum course will be allocated a portfolio in the Monsoon editorial team. They will be expected to make systematic and frequent contributions to Monsoon's activities, and to maintain regular correspondence with the course convenor and the student Editor-in-Chief of the magazine. Attendance at editorial meetings and meetings with the course convenor is required.Requisite and Incompatibility

Most of the reading for this course will deal with online materials from academic, official, journalistic and social media sources. Students will be encouraged to maintain a wide awareness of different media products as they relate to the requirements of the practicum course.
Assumed Knowledge
Students enrolled in the course will benefit from at least one year of prior University-level study in areas of Asia-Pacific Studies, the humanities and social sciences. However students with strong backgrounds in other fields seeking to develop their skills in Asia-Pacific media production will also find the course relevant to their interests. Practicum students are also encouraged to have completed, or plan to complete, ASIA2091 "Media in Asia".Fees
