This course introduces students to the historical underpinnings of current trends in new media arts. Through lectures, screenings, directed reading and excursions it will examine the history and theory of the digital arts and the role creative digital art works have played in the arts, the sciences and society at large. The course will allow students to reflect on their own creative practice and develop their research skills through researching, analysing and evaluating creative works in historical context, and in relation to their own creative work. By participating in weekly seminars, researching and in class presentation, writing a paper, and maintaining a research blog students will develop critical skills in relation to their own work and the work of others.
