This course will examine plays of major American playwrights of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through text analysis and performance activities. A brief history of American Theatre in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries will also be studied. At the end of the course students will be expected to perform in a scene from one of the plays considered during the semester.

  1. Articulate orally and in writing an understanding of key concepts and theatre practices in American drama since the 1940s.
  2. Identify and critically analyse these key concepts and practices.
  3. Carry out independent research on topics related to 20th Century American drama theory and practice.
  4. Make appropriate performance methodology choices for performance of selected texts.
  5. Apply theoretical  concepts in performance or in a written production book.
  6. Understand and successfully deploy a range of terms and concepts integral to literary studies.

Indicative Assessment


Essay One, 2000 words (25%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6]
Essay Two, 2000 words (25%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6]
2 x assessed in-class and video-recorded workshop performances or project books (12.5% each). Video-recorded performances will be assessed by 2 examiners [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Tutorial presentation 15-20 minutes and a 1000 word write-up (25%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 6]
1 x 1,000 word dramatic scene analysis [Learning Outcomes 2, 4, 6]

Workload


130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact: 12 hours of lectures , 12 hours of tutorials, and 24 hours of workshops.
b) 82 hours of independent student research, reading, writing and rehearsals.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Masters level program. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ENGL2115.
