This course has an emphasis on understanding contemporary Hindi-Urdu public discourse. It continues with the development of listening and reading comprehension skills and with the development of oral and written communication. Students will learn and practise how to write a extended texts in Hindi-Urdu and how to give a class presentation with an academic content.

The course continues the study of twentieth century Hindi-Urdu literature and engages students in the study of topical issues in contemporary Hindi-speaking societies. In particular it also includes research on the role of newsmedia and Bollywood in contemporary South Asian cultures world wide. Furthermore, the course provides students with learning opportunities in the area of intercultural communication.

  1. Select the appropriate language register for a variety of social and cultural contexts to express him/herself clearly, without having to restrict what he/she wants to say.
  2. Use language for a range of purposes, such as in literary, academic, and cultural contexts 
  3. Read and analyse longer texts and relate them to Hindi-Urdu speaking cultures.
  4. Engage in analysis of current affairs in Hindi-Urdu speaking communities
  5. Conduct small research projects in Hindi, including research, writing and presentation.

Indicative Assessment

Three outside-class written assignments (each 600 word equivalent) – 1800 words - 45%

Four quizzes (100 words each) – 400 words – 10%

One 1-hour in-class mid-semester test - 15%

One 15 minute final oral presentation - 15%

One 1-hour in-class final-semester test - 15%

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course students must have completed HIND6500 or a language placement proficiency test. Students cannot enrol in this course if they have already completed HIND6003 or HIND3600.
