This course develops a critical understanding of diverse historiographical approaches in the discipline of history. It provides students with an in-depth appreciation of contemporary historiography in order to develop skills in both critical analysis and problem-based research design. The course will be team-taught by the School of History in seminar format to promote a community of researchers and scholars.

Workload
Either:3 contact hours per week (1 x 2 hour reading seminar and 1 x 1 hour workshop) for 12 weeks. Students are expected to spend an additional 7 hours per week completing assigned readings, conducting research, and preparing for assessments (total 130 hours).
Or:
Weeks 1-6: 6 contact hours per week (2 x 2 hour reading seminar and 2 x 1 hour workshop), with 4 hours course reading and assignment preparation time. Weeks 7-12: 10 hours per week conducting research and writing of final essay, and preparing and presenting an oral presentation of a case study (total 130 hours).
