Developing and Implementing Industry Policy (POGO8070)

The course will add an industry policy perspective to the preceding teaching on economic concepts, drivers of economic growth and change, and key theories influencing modern economic thinking.  With the course becoming the end-point of the first year of teaching, there will be a concerted focus on bringing together key elements of the earlier courses and to enlarge policy perspectives and skills.

After introductory and review sessions, the course will take a systemic approach to industry policy development and implementation in the global economy.

There will be core themes around global systems, business systems, governance systems and policy systems.  From a comparative perspective, national experience in industry policy will be examined in Australia and several selected countries in the USA, Europe and Asia.  Emphasis will be placed on international engagement, the knowledge economy, innovation, capital attraction and regional development.  As well, current policy issues will be canvassed in-depth for several industries and sectors in Australia, bringing in the roles of the respective levels of government.  This will carry over to examination of policy implementation.
