This course provides students with an opportunity to undertake detailed study of a chosen original topic situated within a sub-field of primatology and/or palaeoanthropology. In collaboration with the Course Convenor, students individually choose one key topic of interest to them and focus on a program of directed readings and regular discussions.

Students may enrol in this course more than once. This course is repeatable for credit, up to a maximum of 12 units, and if repeated must be repeated with a different topic each time.

  1. Understand the underlying principles of the primatology or palaeoanthropology sub-discipline identified for study;
  2. Develop the ability to critically review readings within the chosen primatology or palaeoanthropology sub-discipline and identify a topic for review; and
  3. Synthesise information from peer-reviewed literary sources to review a topic within the chosen sub-discipline of primatology or palaeoanthropology.

Indicative Assessment

Assessment to be negotiated within a guideline of 6000 words in total across all written assignments.
Suggested assessment format:
One page problem statement and annotated bibliography relevant to proposed essay, 1500 words (20%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 2]
Major essay, 4500 words (80%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 3]

Workload

30 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 12 hours of contact over 12 weeks of one-to-one meetings; and
b) 118 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 12 units of 6000/7000/8000-level Biological Anthropology (BIAN) courses.

You will need to contact the School of Archaeology and Anthropology to request a permission code to enrol in this course.
