In the 21st century, humanity faces grand challenges in the sustainability of the world. Materials engineering has a critical role to play in this field, as many approaches to addressing the challenges are material-related. This course will provide students a learning opportunity in sustainable development from a materials engineering point of view, with a particular emphasis on advanced nanomaterials. The course will discuss the use of advanced materials and nanomaterials not only in the field of energy (generation, storage, saving) but also environment, water, transportation, health, infrastructure and food security, including the environmental and social impacts of nanomaterials innovation.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the properties of advanced nanomaterials that can be ustilised in the applications related to sustainable development.
- Understand the multidisciplinary nature of the challenges in sustainable development and appreciate importance of effective communication of the issues to a range of audiences including the general public.
- Apply the knowledge of the properties of advanced nanomaterials to design new approaches to the challenges in sustainable development
- Analyse the problems encountered in the current applications of advanced nanomaterials for sustainable development
- Use Life-cycle thinking to develop new material-based technology
- Tutorial participation (10%)
