This course offers an individualised course of study under the guidance of the primary supervisor or other member of the supervisory panel. It involves in-depth reading and analysis in an area directly relevant to their field of study. The research topic and readings are to be negotiated by the supervisor and student. Time spent will focus on planning and conducting the piece of research, and on academic skills development including ethical practice.

  1. 1. Formulate a coherent program of reading in consultation with the supervisor.
  2. 2. Identify and evaluate key debates in a field of study and articulate these to an advanced level in written form.
  3. 3. Articulate research questions and unresolved issues arising from an identifiable body of literature.

Indicative Assessment

Research Plan (including reading list, anticipated scope of topic, justification of topic relevance, areas not covered) up to 1000 words 30% [LO 1, 2]
Research paper : 4000 words 70% [LO 1, 2, 3]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

Students are expected to complete 130 hours of study for this course which includes:
24 hours of direct consultations and communication between supervisor and student, and
106 hours of independent reading, research and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course students must obtain permission from their HDR Chair of Panel.

Assumed Knowledge

Students must have knowledge of Indigenous Studies research and debates, and/or relevant experience in professional practice, policy application, and/or industry and development issues.
