This course engages law students in non-government organisational activity in developing countries. Students learn aspects of law and practice in international aid and development, reflect on the role of NGOs and on cultural dimensions of law, and support the capacity of NGOs to pursue their development mission. Students work in teams to carry out human rights policy research for a partner NGO, under supervision by staff both at ANU and at the NGO. The students' research tasks produce an output - a report, a proposal, a program of activity, a submission etc - which supports the NGO's work. Possible areas of likely research include poverty, women and children, juvenile justice, community legal education, and public legal services. Students will attend scheduled classes at ANU, read relevant academic material, maintain a reflective journal, carry out prescribed assessment tasks. Students will be supervised regularly by NGO staff through online communications technology.
Enrolment is limited according to the availability of places with NGOs, and so students must apply for admission to the course.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
