This course aims to provide the ADF Legals' Officer Special Career Structure (LOSCR) with the military advocacy law component of Legal Training Module 2. This is the educational requirement for ADF Legal Officers to qualify for legal competency level LL3 under the LOSCR approved by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal.
A student who has successfully completed the course should have:
- a thorough understanding of the role of ADF Legal Officers in military advocacy
- an understanding of the process of marshalling information in a Military Court environment
- an understanding of the process of adducing information and the legal context for it
- an understanding of the factors to be considered in presentation and of the reasons for them
- the ability to demonstrate the desired attributes of a military advocate.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
A student who has successfully completed this course should be able to:1. Demonstrate competence in applying communication skills (oral, written and non-verbal) in a military environment;
2. Understand the unique requirements of applying military advocacy skills in various fora in which a military legal officer might practice;
3. Appreciate different approaches that can be adopted to the effective delivery of military legal training in a range of scenarios and in response to different audiences;
4. Demonstrate appropriate techniques for presenting written and oral briefings to senior military officers; and
5. Recognise how civilian legal ‘best practice’ in the management of a legal office can be successfully adapted to the military legal environment.
Indicative Assessment
To satisfy Defence's competency requirements:
- 100% practical advocacy exercises during intensive.
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
