This course will feature advanced topics related to active areas of photonics research at the ANU.  Each year will include a selection from laser physics, quantum optics, quantum cryptographic communications, high-resolution metrology in the space sciences, nonlinear optics, photonic materials, modern imaging optical systems and astrophotonics.

  1. Apply theoretical and practical foundations of photonics knowledge in an advanced topic
  2. Research by reading and understanding current technical literature which underpins the topic of study
  3. Organise the relevant technical ideas behind cutting edge photonic systems
  4. Write scientific and technical reports related to photonic systems.

5 quizzes (10%), LO 1;

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be currently enrolled in the Master of Engineering (Photonics), or with prior approval of the course convenor.

Prescribed Texts

Lecture notes and select references relevant to topic, as well as research articles from technical journals.


Assumed Knowledge

Two semesters of university level mathematics for physicists and engineers; two semesters of first year university advanced level physics. Students must be familiar with the basic theory of optics, including familiarity with Maxwell’s equations and wave concepts.  Students are recommended to complete the first year of the Master of Engineering in Photonics program before enrolling in this course.
