This course is designed to prepare students for first year undergraduate study. It aims to develop students’ skills in applying mathematics in solving real-world problems. This course makes reference to various application fields including business and social studies, and can also serve as a base for future mathematics courses. This course will also make use of technology such as Excel, Geogebra and Mathematica to support the mathematical and statistical content where appropriate.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. enact the steps of applied mathematical problem-solving by gathering, analysing and interpreting data;
2. use Mathematical Modelling techniques to solve an assortment of applied problems from fields of studyincluding social studies and business;
3. interpret data and use mathematical argument and reasoning to devise solutions to real-world problems;
4. be familiar with various applications of Mathematical Modelling in solving real-world problems.
5. utilize digital technology to assist and enhance the learning of mathematical and statistical concepts and inthe construction, analysis and presentation of mathematical tasks.

Indicative Assessment

In-class test (15%; LO 1-4)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

96 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact: 48 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities.
b) 48 hours of supported and independent student research, reading and writing. 

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying ANU Activate. You cannot enrol in this course if you have completed or are enrolled in PREP1018 Activate Mathematics.
