This course provides an in-depth survey of cognitive psychology: the scientific study of how humans process, represent, and recall information. Topics covered include: methodological approaches to cognitive psychology (including cognitive neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience), visual attention, learning, memory, and decision-making. The application of cognitive-psychological knowledge and tools to advancing the understanding of abnormal cognitive processes in patients will also be covered.

1.    Describe the fundamental concepts and major themes in cognitive psychology, and the theories and methods that have been used to address these.

2.    Compare and contrast particular approaches to studying cognition (including behavioural, neuropsychological and neuroimaging) in light of their use to answer a particular research question.

3.    Apply critical analysis skills to evaluate cognitive research studies and conclusions 

4.    Develop a reasoned argument by critically analysing cognitive research.

Indicative Assessment

In-class quizzes 20% (LO 1-3)

An invigilated examination 50% (LO 1-3)

A written assignment 30% (LO 4)


The examination must be passed in order for an overall pass in the course to be awarded. 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

Class contact time: Two hours of lectures per week and 12 hours of laboratories spread across the semester.

To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed PSYC1003 and PSYC1004.
