Students in this course carry out advanced research on a question of their choice relating to the fields of Criminology, Justice or Regulation. The topic is agreed with their thesis supervisor and approved by the Master of Criminology, Justice and Regulation convenor. Students design and implement a project to answer their research question, to place the answer in the context of an intellectual tradition, and to communicate it clearly to others.

  2. Investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology as appropriate to the discipline, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
  3. Communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium, at a level close to publishable quality

Other Information

The course proceeds through one-on-one mentoring of all stages of the student's project by a supervising academic.

Students may be required to present their work in draft in a seminar to staff and peers. They will be supported to develop their oral and digital research presentation skills because this is an important part of research communication.

Indicative Assessment

Written thesis - maximum of 20,000 words (100%)
  1. The thesis must demonstrate all learning outcomes for the course.
  2. The length of the thesis is a maximum of 20,000 words exclusive of footnotes, tables, figures, maps, bibliography, and appendices. There is a penalty of 10% for exceeding this word limit.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

The course will be delivered through individuals meetings with an academic supervisor over the course of an academic semester and will amount to 130 hours total coursework.

Assumed Knowledge

Offered as part of the Master of Criminology, Justice and Regulation (Advanced). Completion of the required courses for that degree are recommended prior to enrolling in this course, but is not required.
