This is a practical course which aims to develop students' science event organisation, delivery and evaluation skills. The emphasis is on presenting science live, in a range of ways driven by theory and best practice, to a relevant general audience. Students learn to consider a relevant audience, and to design, plan, market, deliver and evaluate a science communication event relevant to that audience.

  1. Understand and describe good public science communication principles
  2. Employ good organisational and decision-making techniques to work as part of a group on a large project
  3. Employ critical thinking to design and guide own learning
  4. Drawing on science communication theory and best practice, pitch, design, plan, deliver and evaluate a public science communication event.
  5. Appraise and critique the work of self and others

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

4 hours of face to face class time per week (2 hours lecture, 2 hours workshop) plus private study and groupwork.

Requisite and Incompatibility

Students must have completed 18 units of 2000 level courses or obtain a permission code from the convener. Incompatibility: SCOM2001, SCOM6017
