This is a supervised research course that gives students an opportunity to complete an extended and focused piece of research using their Arabic language skills.  Focal topics will be related to Arabic, Middle East, or Islamic Studies.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of some aspects of advanced Arabic writing styles.
  2. Extend their capacity to use syntactic and discourse structures appropriately to undertake  research on a topic in Arabic.
  3. Demonstrate their ability to present their findings in a scholarly manner in Arabic.
  4. Demonstrate good linguistic skills and functional understanding of Arabic Language.

Indicative Assessment

Three stage essay in Arabic :
  • Proposal, 150 words (5%);
  • Progress report, 250 words (10%);and
  • Final essay, 3100 words (40%)

Three stage oral presentation in Arabic:
  • Proposal  presentation, up to 5 minutes (5%); 
  • Progress report presentation, up to 7 minutes (10%); and
  • Final presentation, up to 20 minutes (30%).

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 24 hours of language classes and research supervision; and b) 106 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed ARAB2012, ARAB6502 or permission of the convenor. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARAB6506.

You will need to contact the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies to request a permission code to enrol in this course.
