This multi-disciplinary course explores concepts of memory in the construction of national identity, the role of memory in the archive and the exploration of memory in contemporary visual practice, film and fiction.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of important theoretical debates about memory and how they are mobilised in public discourses and institutions such as the memorial and the museum
  2. Relate theoretical debates about memory to developments in the visual arts.
  3. Present written and oral arguments about the ways in which memory and the past is configured in public discourses and institutions and within the visual arts.

Indicative Assessment

1000 word written essay (25%) [Learning Outcomes 1-3]

2500 word essay (45%) [Learning Outcomes 1-3]

8 minute tutorial presentation (20%) [Learning Outcomes 3]

Participation (10%) [Learning Outcomes 1-2]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials; and b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 36 units of ANU courses towards a degree, or with the permission of the convenor. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTV2024, ARTV6103 or ARTH6163.
