This course guides students in intensive and extensive Independent level readings and in analysis and discussion of Chinese texts in a field of specialisation. It is suitable for heritage learners or students who have completed the 'Year in China' course and have an advanced level of proficiency in spoken and written Chinese. The content of the course will cover different aspects of modern Chinese culture and society and will prepare students for independent research in different fields. At the same time, it will improve their skills of reading comprehension, speaking, writing, analysis, and translation.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills at an Independent level of Standard Modern Chinese to:1. Discuss and present on relevant topics of Chinese culture and society in fields of specialization; produce advanced-level Chinese language Powerpoint presentations.
2. Analyse themes in the materials under study and offer critical written responses.
3. Demonstrate an advanced ability to read and evaluate texts on a range of topics about Chinese culture and society, and extrapolate meanings from context.
4. Produce translations from Chinese into English to a high level of proficiency.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western culture and society

This is a co-taught course. Any cap on enrolments in one course applies to both courses combined.

Workload
The workload for this course comprises three contact hours per week. It demands an average of four hours of tutorial preparation, including assigned readings, and review of lectures. The total workload for the course is 130 hours including independent study.
