The course begins by contrasting the theoretical models of stable and stationary populations with the reality of population change. The processes of birth, death and migration shape the size and structure of a population in ever-changing ways. This course covers the cohort-component method of population projection and its application, including how to provide input about the future of these demographic processes. Population dynamics involves the understanding and interpretation of the changing population structure due to the interplay of demographic processes, themselves dependent on socio-economic and other factors. As population dynamics transform many aspects of social and economic life, the process is one of constant renewal. Population ageing, demographic dividends and other specific aspects of population dynamics are examined.

- Generate justifiable future series of demographic processes
- Generate, interpret and evaluate alternative population projections
- Demonstrate and interpret how fertility, mortality and migration affect population change
- Evaluate the role of population dynamics in socio-economic change
- Review and critique research on population projections and population dynamics
