Design students will learn new skills and techniques for designing large ceramic design based works. Focusing on designing for both wheel and hand building  for the construction of large scale work that utilise concepts and processes for different design briefs.  Students will undertake research into the history of large scale ceramic design work.
This course alternates over two years (even and odd years).  Even years will explore wheel throwing skills and techniques. Odd years will explore hand building techniques. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

  1. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of the processes, terminology, forms and materials of ceramics design practice.
  2. Apply appropriate skills and knowledge to the making of ceramic creative design works on a large scale.
  3. Develop and evaluate concepts, designs and processes by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively.
  4. Work independently and/or collaboratively in a workshop environment in response to the design project demands.
  5. Reflect on social, ethical, cultural, technological and environmental issues of creative design considering local and international perspectives of Ceramic Design.

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1 -5]

Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%).  (1000 words) [LOs 2, 4, 5]

Assessment will be based on the Rubric for this course

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice; and b) 82 hours of independent studio practice, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of Design Arts and have successfully completed ARTV1011 or ARTV1101. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTV2004 or ARTV2104 or ARTV2119 or DESA2104 or DESA3001.
