Students in this course will be responsible for the management of the Student Managed Fund (SMF), under the guidance of course convenors. The primary task of students will be to make investment recommendations to be reviewed and endorsed by an Investment Advisory Committee that includes industry practitioners and ANU staff. Another key role of students enrolled in the course is to undertake management roles and be responsible for the day-to-day functions typical of a managed fund. An SMF Charter and Governance Structure will set out the policies and procedures under which the SMF operates.

Admission to the course will be restricted to those students who have completed the Student Managed Fund Course with a grade of at least a credit. To ensure continuity, students enrolled in the Student Managed Fund Extension course will adopt senior managerial and decision-making roles; and will be responsible for training the students enrolled in the Student Managed Fund course. Students learning occurs through being responsible for managing the SMF and its activities, and undertaking research in order to formulate investment recommendations and design investment processes. The course is essentially an advanced form of activity-based learning, where teaching staff provide direction and support through workshops and consultations rather than formal lectures.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On satisfying the requirements for the course, students will gain the following knowledge and skills:

1. Capacity to apply and communicate the process of managing money in pursuit of investment objectives.
2. Deep understanding of how the fund management industry operates.
3. An extended capacity to communicate and advocate recommendations for action in an applied setting.
4. Ability to operate in a team environment.
5. Ability to supervise and mentor students in the field of fund management.

Indicative Assessment

Assessment will reflect a combination of grades awarded by teaching staff (convenors), feedback from external members of the Investment Advisory Committee, and peer evaluation by other enrolled students. Grades will reflect evaluation of: written research reports and supporting analysis; presentations of investment cases to the enrolled student group and Investment Advisory Committee; teamwork; and contributions to furthering the long-term goals of the SMF. The latter would reflect aspects such as engagement with external parties, effort put into building management processes and infrastructure that support the SMF, and attention to training of students enrolled in Student Managed Fund. Students will be graded on their participation and involvement in SMF group meetings, and engagement with external parties as appropriate.

Assessment links to the learning objectives in the following way:

1. Understanding of process of managing money - evaluation of research reports, analysis and presentations
2. Appreciation for how fund management operates - evaluation of research reports, analysis and presentations; participations and involvement and engagement
3. Capacity to communicate and advocate recommendations - evaluation of research reports and presentations
4. Ability to operate in a team environment - evaluation of contribution to teamwork and furthering of the SMF goals; student peer assessment

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

Students will be expected to commit 10-12 hours per week on average, although the workload may be uneven and some passionate students may choose to dedicate additional time. In addition to the 3-hour weekly SMF meeting, this time would be spent on activities such as: investment analysis; research into topics related to the management of the fund; preparation of reports and presentations; and communicating and engaging with other students, the convenors, the Investment Committee and external parties.
