This course provides an overview of the history of Jazz from its origins in African-American communities of the Southern United States to modern Bebop and avant-garde movements. It aims to introduce the major stylistic movements in Jazz over the past century as well as give students a solid understanding of the key social and musical forces that have shaped the rise of Jazz to an international cultural phenomenon.
