Thai 1 sets students on the path to an engagement with Thailand by introducing them to the Thai language, both spoken and written, and developing in them the cultural knowledge required to support effective day-to-day interactions.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills at an Introductory level of Thai to:1. Recognise and use all Thai consonants, vowels and tone markers, including their combination in syllables.
2. Recognise and use a basic scheme of transliteration; recognise various Thai fonts and use a Thai computer keyboard.
3. Use an active vocabulary of about 1000 items.
4. Recognise and use basic Thai grammar and sentence structures, such as subject-verb-object structures, conjunctions, simple modifiers, and particles.
5. Use simple Thai expressions to discuss issues relating to kinship relations, personal status, greetings, occupations, numbers, time, food, travel-related signs, requesting help and basic transactions.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of and respect for Thai cultural norms and sensitivities, as well as distinctive Thai behaviours.
Other Information
This course is 100% online.
All students with previous 'language experience or exposure' are required to take a language placement test to determine their language proficiency in order to ensure enrolment into the language course at the most appropriate level.
The Course Convenor, in consultation with the Language Convenor will move students into an appropriate level course if students are deemed to be of a different proficiency level. Students are also encouraged to consult their course convenors immediately upon if they find that their proficiency level differs from that expected by the course.
As language courses are sequential, this may mean that students can only commence their language course in the following semester.

Indicative Assessment
Oral tests during the semester (40%), written assignments (20%), written mid-semester and final exam (40%).
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
Each week students are expected to study for 5.5 hours as follows:
1. 60 minutes, before online lecture, working on the written and audio materials for the week, and, memorising the written and spoken forms of that week’s vocabulary
2. 90 minutes, participating in one 90 minute online lecture
3. 120 minutes, completing weekly assessment regarding listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
4. 60 minutes, completing weekly vocab quiz
It is also expected that students should spend at least 5 hours of individual study practicing the week’s written and spoken language forms and vocabulary and reviewing feedback on their weekly assessment and quiz.
