The course provides an introduction to independent research in archaeology and to the preparation of a research thesis. Coursework will be framed around the enrolled students' individual honours projects, and course meetings will include a mix of formal instruction and group-based discussion. Readings will include papers and books on archaeological and research methodology, academic readings relevant to individual honours projects and scholarly theses.

  2. Present logical, structured and supported arguments;
  3. Communicate effectively with peers and colleagues about sophisticated archaeological concepts in seminar and presentation contexts;
  4. Design, develop and carry out initial research for an honours thesis project.

Indicative Assessment

Annotated bibliography (20%) - LO: 1, 4 ca. 1000 words

30 minute Presentation (15%) with 2 page summary ca. 750 words (15%) concerning background to and methodology for honours thesis - LO: 1, 2, 3, 4

3-4000 word Literature Review chapter for honours thesis (40%) - LO: 1, 2, 4

Participation in seminar discussion (10%) - LO: 3

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 24 hours of lectures and 12 hours of tutorials and tutorial-like activities; and
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading, and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of Arts Honours (HARTS or HART2), Bachelor of Archaeological Practice Honours (HAPRC) or Bachelor of Asian Studies Honours (HASIA), or completed 144 units towards the Bachelor of Philosophy (Arts) (APHAR or APNAR)
