SELT Survey Results

International firms need to formulate company policies that take account of the fact that they manufacture, service, employ and market to or in countries with different laws, different beliefs and different levels of socio-economic development compared to a firm’s country of origin. This course examines the contextual, organisational and managerial issues associated with the operation of multinational firms. Interactions between contextual elements and management of an international enterprise will be studied from both theoretical and practical perspectives. The course includes topics such as international strategic management; international social and ethical responsibilities of firms; cross-cultural management and communication; international human resource management and workplace relations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. explain and illustrate the international strategic management processes used by top level management in multinational enterprises;
  2. define, explain and illustrate the relationships among philosophic roots and approaches for international strategic planning and implementation, strategies for value chain activity integration, international business strategies, structure of multinational enterprises, and human resource management orientations, and the role which culture plays in managing multinational enterprises;
  3. creatively apply knowledge from different approaches to strategic management issues and problems of multinational enterprises, demonstrating thorough understanding of the various international strategic management concepts and their practical application; and,
  4. communicate effectively in oral and written forms about international strategic management using appropriate concepts, logic and rhetorical conventions.

Research-Led Teaching

Bridging the research-practice gap in international strategic management is a key focus of this

course. This gap will be addressed in three ways:

1. Course content based on rigorous scholarly research in fields closely allied to international strategic management;

2. Discussion of ways to apply these research findings to actual practice, including using evidence-based management methods; and

3. Assessment tasks that require students to apply research findings to practical settings.

Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Business Environment Analysis Report (BEAR)

Important notes:

The team will be allocated a 20 minutes slot during week 11 seminar to present their project.

The team project written report is due at 4pm on June 7th, 2019. Submit your report via turn-it-in on Wattle.

The written report has a word limit of 3000.


This assessment task takes the form of a team project towards a detailed report to the CEO of an Australian company chosen from the list provided on Wattle. The report should provide an assessment of the business environment in one country in which the company already has operations. A detailed task specification will be provided on Wattle.


The purpose of this task is to develop skills in undertaking research, evaluation of relevant business conditions, and formulation of criteria for decision-making and strategy recommendations. This assessment is intended to further develop your research and analytical skills (i.e. evidence based management) in issues related to international business strategy.

Take-home Exam – Case Analysis Report

This individual assessment task is due at 4pm on Friday 14 June, submit via turn-it-in on wattle.


An international business strategy related case, randomly drawn from a pool of cases, will be provided to each student on the last seminar. Students will be required to analyse the given case drawing on the knowledge, concepts, and decision tools covered during the course to answer the questions provided. All cases, together with the marking criteria, will be posted on Wattle after the last seminar.


Students are required to write a case analysis report (500-1,000 words) that addresses the case questions. Your report can be based on the information provided in the case; however you are encouraged to research additional data, information, or evidence to strengthen your arguments.

Online Submission

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Resubmission of Assignments

Unless specified otherwise in the assessment requirements, resubmissions are permitted up until the due date and time, but not allowed afterwards.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service — including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy. Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
