This course will guide students to develop a real-world digital communication system based on a state-of-the-art digital communication standard called DVB-T2. This course provides students the opportunities to apply their engineering knowledge and skills in an integral way to deeply understand and develop advanced coding and signal processing techniques. One such technique is OFDM, the core technique in 4G LTE. MATLAB will be used in the course to implement and evaluate the system.

Overview of practical wireless channel models and their impacts on signal processing

Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) code

Bit interleaved coded modulation (BICM) techniques
Orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) modulation and demodulation
OFDM time and frequency synchronization techniques
OFDM channel estimation techniques
OFDM peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) reduction techniques
Special DVB-T2 preamble signals.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Apply the specialised knowledge in wireless communications theory and signal processing to design the transmitter and receiver for the state-of-the-art digital communication standard named DVB-T2.
- Build a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the underlying principle behind different modules of DVB-T2, such as modulation, channel coding, and multiple-carrier transmission, and their relationships.
- Identify and characterise the impact of different wireless channel models on the system performance achieved by certain coding schemes and signal processing algorithms.
- Apply appropriate BCH coding technique and LDPC coding technique to design transmitter and receiver and critically assess the achieved performance with different wireless channel models.
- Understand the fundamentals of OFDM, analyse and interpret the symbol timing and carrier frequency offset of OFDM signals, and evaluate its effect on the DVB-T2 system.
- Implement OFDM synchronisation and channel estimation techniques into the designed system and critically examine the system performance in realistic engineering scenarios.
- Plan, execute and report on a group-based project and communicate professionally and effectively in written form about the obtained outcomes.

WorkloadStandard workload (approx. 10 hours a week). 2 lectures (1 x 2-hour lecture and 1 x 1-hour lecture) per week, up to 1 x 1-hour tutorial per week, and approximately 6 hours independent and group-based study per week.
