Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems have advanced rapidly in recent decades and now play an important role in environmental fields including land and water management, forestry, climate science, biodiversity conservation, urban and rural planning, and social research. Spatial data are becoming increasingly accessible and are being utilised by a wide range of government and research agencies, consulting firms and other private businesses. This course provides the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to use remote sensing and GIS data and techniques to address applications in environment and society. It provides a true enabling technology for the earth, life and social sciences and a rich source of computational and representational challenges for the computer sciences.  The course exposes students to a range of biophysical and social applications for remote sensing and GIS, from which each student independently investigates and writes a research paper.

  1. Understand spatial environment and society research and applications
  2. Synthesise and apply that knowledge to formulate new applications
  3. Pursue a guided investigation of a topic involving remote sensing and/or GIS
  4. Communicate the results of that investigation in seminar and written formats

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

Up to 130 hours, including 24 contact hours comprising lectures and guest seminars; 12 hours of computer labs; approximately 32 hours of self-study and reading; and up to 62 hours of independent lab work and research.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 72 units towards a degree. Incompatible with ENVS6319.

Assumed Knowledge

Completion of ENVS2015 GIS and Spatial Analysis or equivalent is strongly recommended.
Knowledge equivalent to that acquired by taking ENVS2015 is assumed.
