This course introduces students to the study of Ancient Greek. It consists of a series of carefully graded readings drawn (for the most part in modified form) from the writers of the Greek world, including Aristophanes and Plato. As students work through these readings they are introduced to the fundamental grammatical principles that underpin the Greek language and to a basic working vocabulary in Greek.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have learned (1) approximately 50% of the grammar and syntax required for fluent reading of Ancient Greek texts. The vocabulary they have learned (2) will enable them to cope with simple passages of Ancient Greek with the aid of a dictionary.

Indicative Assessment

Weekly tests (10%) (LO 1, 2)

Weekly assignments (40%) (LO 1, 2)

Final examination (50%) (LO 1,2).

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact in language classes over 12 weeks, and
b) 82 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed CLAS1001. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course. Incompatible with GREK2119 or GREK6112
