This ‘shell’ course provides a vehicle for students to participate in various different learning abroad opportunities that may be offered by the Law School at ANU in any given year, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. These opportunities may include Law School-led study tours, offshore programs delivered by partner institutions, offshore programs delivered by the Law School, and other experiences.
The topic being offered within this course will vary from year to year, and amount to either 6 or 12 units of ANU course credit. Information on each topic offered within this shell course will be outlined on ANU ‘Courses and Programs’ in the 'Other Information' section of that site. This will include the topic title, information on the unit value, convener, academic session and indicative workload.
All of the topics offered through this shell course would be made available through a competitive selection process. The criteria would be as follows: academic merit in law courses to date (40%); compelling rationale for taking the course, including a demonstrated interest in the country / region / topic offered (40%); and ‘last opportunity’ factors (whether in final year of undergraduate study) (20%). The third factor would mean preference is given, all else being equal, to students who might not be able to undertake a course like this again in another year; ‘demonstrated interest’ can include an unsuccessful application in a previous year.
Undergraduate ANU law students participating in this course may wish to explore whether they will be eligible to apply for funding support through the Government’s New Colombo Plan (NCP) scheme. The ANU College of Law may apply for NCP funding for certain iterations of this course in any given year or years.

- Investigate and apply specialist knowledge within the area of law and/or legal system(s) studied.
- Critically analyse case law AND/OR legislation AND/OR scholarly writings on the specialist areas of law and/or legal system(s) studied.
- Incorporate social, comparative or interdisciplinary approaches into legal analysis.
- Synthesise legal research and present findings using a variety of materials and sources.
- Engage in original and critical reflection on the law and / or legal system.
- Contribute to debates on theoretical, policy and practical issues in the areas of law and/or legal system(s) studied.
