In this course, we will cover some of the main themes in the philosophy of language. We shall look at the topics of sense and reference, definite descriptions, proper names, metaphor, and belief. We shall examine the views of leading philosophers of language of the past 100 years (Frege, Quine, Kripke and Davidson).

  1. explain some major issues in the Philosophy of Language;
  2. express and expound views and pre-suppositions clearly and lucidly;
  3. understand and critically evaluate theories, arguments and pre-suppositions in the Philosophy of Language; and
  4. analyse and critically evaluate arguments rigorously.

Indicative Assessment

Essays, 2x2500 words each (45% each for a total of 90%) Learning outcomes 1-4

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 35 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 24 hours of lectures and 11 hours of tutorials and tutorial-like activities; and
b) 95 hours of independent student research, reading, and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 12 Units of Philosophy (PHIL) or Linguistics (LING) Courses, or with permission of the convenor. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed PHIL3056.
