This course continues to build on Introductory Portuguese I, and develops further the students' reading, writing and conversational skills at an advanced beginner's level with Portuguese as the only medium of instruction. Teaching is based on a communicative approach to language learning simulating real-life situations in the classroom as well as in the language-learning centre. The course also continues to introduce and expands on cultural aspects and traditional knowledge related the Portuguese speaking world through the language classes.

  1. demonstrate strong knowledge of Portuguese grammar and lexicon;
  2. demonstrate fluent communication skills that allow them to discuss a variety of topics confidently in Portuguese;
  3. read, comprehend and understand high level literary and non-literary texts;
  4. write longer texts and short essays; and
  5. show good understanding of cultural and traditional practices.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: communicative practise and learning in language tutorials; and
b) 82 hours of independent student research, reading and writing in preparation for the weekly language tutorials.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have successfully completed PORT1001 or have equivalent level of language proficiency as demonstrated by placement test. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed PORT6502. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course.
