The course is designed to develop numeracy skills and familiarity with the language of mathematics and
statistics. Core topics include basic mathematical concepts, function graphing, basic statistics and an introduction to algebra. Students will explore real-life applications of the mathematical and statistical concepts they are studying, examining how these concepts are used and applied in tertiary level study and research in a range of disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Perform basic mathematical operations and apply these to real-world problems.
2. Use basic concepts of geometry and trigonometry to solve mathematical problems.
3. Apply simple algebraic concepts to solve mathematical problems.
4. Analyse and communicate information using basic statistical techniques including graphical representationand interpretation of data.
5. Communicate in the language of mathematics and demonstrate an awareness of the role of mathematicsand its applications in solving real-world problems.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

96 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 72 hours of contact: 72 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities.
b) 24 hours of supported and independent student research, reading and writing.
