This course is designed to build transferable literacy skills needed for success in PREP1016: Activate Literacy, as well as in the tertiary learning environment. The course guides students through the process of analysing, evaluating and responding to a range of texts. As students compare and discuss these texts, they will also reflect on the importance of considering purpose, audience, and context in making decisions about structure and style. Students will reflect on their own writing processes as they analyse and evaluate texts, using academic conventions and structures and adhering to principles of academic integrity.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Interpret, analyse, and evaluate texts;
2. Appraise and assess arguments and evidence;
3. Use academic language to express ideas;
4. Use an academic referencing system in a researched piece of work;
5. Plan and write an argumentative essay.

Indicative Assessment

Integrating evidence and paraphrasing: assessment task (20%; L.O. 1, 2, 3, 4)
Critical analysis of oral or written text (30%; L.O. 1-3 )
Editing for academic purposes: assessment task (20%; L. O. 1-3)
Essay (30%; L.O. 1-5)

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

96 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact: 48 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities.
b) 48 hours of supported and independent student research, reading and writing.
