The Legal Studies course is designed to prepare international students for first year undergraduate study, particularly in business, humanities or law-related disciplines. The objectives of this course are to develop students’ conceptual understanding of fundamental legal principles, whilst also developing their critical legal skills, such as analysing, synthesising, evaluating and reflecting.  Students will be expected to participate in a series of class lectures and tutorials, to engage in both independent learning and group work and to complete all assessment tasks in a timely manner.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe and explain key aspects of the Australian legal system;
2. identify and explain the key differences between the Australian legal system and legal systems from around the world;
3. evaluate the effectiveness of the law in achieving justice;
4. locate, select, organise, synthesise and analyse legal information from a variety of sources including legislation, cases, media, international instruments and documents;
5. communicate legal information using well-structured and logical arguments; and
6. analyze and debate differing perspectives and interpretations of legal information and issues.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

80 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 40 hours of contact: 40 hours of workshop and workshop-like activities.
b) 40 hours of supported and independent student research, reading and writing.

Students must be enrolled in the ANU Express Program.
