Topic for Semester 1 2017: ‘From Gutenberg to Digital Disruption: Sociology & Communication Revolutions'

This course offers students a unique opportunity for the advanced study of a special thematic in the discipline of Sociology. The course content will vary from year to year in response to emerging theoretical, methodological, and empirical issues occurring in the discipline, and in accordance with the research interests and expertise  of School visitors and sessional staff.

  2. Explain key conceptual and empirical  issues in written and/or oral form, at a level consistent with the expectations of the discipline.
  3. Use sociological theory, understanding, and methods to interpret and apply the material covered in the course in a critical fashion.

Individual assessment tasks to a total of 4500 words or equivalent, which may include an examination and/or oral presentation (90%) [learning outcomes 1, 2, 3]
 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

Students are expected to complete 130 hours of study for this course, which includes 36 hours of contact with teaching staff and 94 hours of independent learning. Contact hours will be delivered as either:
a) a two (2) hour lecture and one (1) hour tutorial each week for 12 weeks; or
b) 36 hours of lectures and tutorials taught intensively over two weeks.
 

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 12 units of 1000 level Sociology (SOCY) or Criminology (CRIM) courses; or with permission of the course convener.
