Tetum is the language of Timor-Leste. The study of Tetum is essential for anyone wishing to understand Timor-Leste's society, culture and history. The ANU offers to rare opportunity to complete a minor in Tetum.Timor-Leste is a close neighbour of Australia and ties between these two countries are increasing through international security, trade and development projects. Students completing a minor in Tetum will be uniquely placed to engage with the Timorese people, state, and society. The four courses needed to complete the minor are not offered on campus, but are instead available 100% online and can be studied from anywhere. Students who complete this language minor will reach an Intermediate level of Tetum skills and knowledge.
In this course, students will improve their Tetum language skills to an intermediate proficiency. Students will learn how to discuss and write about a variety of topics including government officials and functions, health, the environment, and Timorese history.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Using an active vocabulary of about 3500 words; read and understand short authentic written texts with a help of a dictionary.
- Understand, use and translate a broad range of sentence structures in extended texts on a range of non-technical topics such as work roles, administration, law and government, violence, environment, and the history of Timor-Leste.
- Communicate in speaking with spontaneity and confidence on topics including discussion of gender roles, Timor-Leste-Australia relations, law and crime, and health; write simple passages on non-technical topics with a fair degree of accuracy.
- Demonstrate an understanding of cultural issues and current affairs in Timor-Leste, including such topics as dating and romance, the environment, and Timor-Leste’s place in the world.

Assessment RequirementsThe ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.
Moderation of AssessmentMarks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Four written tests 20%
There are four major written tests during the course. The questions in these tests are drawn from the exercises, vocabulary and translations from learned lessons. To do well in a written test you need to have completed all the exercises in the lessons concerned, and you need to have a good command of the vocabulary presented for study. Each test is worth 5% or a total of 20% of your final results.
FIRST TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday 16 of August, 2019. The test will examine your knowledge of the vocabulary, exercises and readings including dialogues and translations in Lessons 33-35.
Test result will be available on Wattle Friday 20 of August, 2019.
SECOND TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday 23 August, 2019. The test will examine your knowledge of vocabulary, exercises, readings and translations in lessons 36-38 from Wattle.
Results of the test will be available on Wattle Friday 6 of September, 2019.
… THIRD TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday 11 October, 2019. The test will examine your knowledge of the vocabulary, exercises, translations and readings in Lessons 39-40 from Wattle
Results of this test will be available on Wattle Friday 18 of October, 2019.
FOURTH TEST will be held on Wattle on Friday 25 October, 2019. The test will examine your knowledge of the vocabulary, exercises, readings and dialogues in Lessons 41-43 from Wattle.
Results of the test will be available on Wattle Friday 8 of November 2019.
All the Tests RESULTS will be on Wattle within a week after completion.

Hardcopy SubmissionFor some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.
No submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date will be permitted. If an assessment task is not submitted by the due date, a mark of 0 will be awarded.

Extensions and PenaltiesExtensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.
Distribution of grades policyAcademic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
