This course ensures students complete their Bachelor of Art History and Curatorship with hands-on practical experience of the curatorial and exhibition process, and a sound knowledge of current museum issues. With access to the School of Art & Design's workshop collection and the School of Art & Design Gallery, students will work collaboratively to document works of art, and prepare an exhibition which will be held at the end of the semester. Students will be able to examine works of art in depth and learn about their material qualities and the techniques used to create them. Presentations from senior museum professionals will engage students with contemporary museum challenges. Throughout this course, students encounter, observe and learn about the inter-related activities that go into making the experience of visiting art exhibitions both educative and enjoyable.

    1. critically describe the respective and inter-related roles of art museum personnel in developing, maintaining, presenting and marketing art collections;
    2. critically evaluate the developmental criteria behind the funding, sponsorship, timing, makings and staging of an art exhibition, and current issues facing museums;
    3. prepare a project timeline for an exhibition; and
    4. describe the techniques and materials associated with an area of artistic practice.

    Reflective journal based on workshop and seminar sessions, 2500 words (25%), Learning Outcomes 1, 2
    Evaluative critique and analysis of an art exhibition current at the time of the course’s delivery, 2500 words (30%), Learning Outcomes 1-3
    Comparative object analysis, 1000 words (15%), Learning Outcome 4

    The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.     Workload

    260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
    a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: 36 hours of workshop sessions and 12 hours of seminars; and
    b) 212 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

    Requisite and Incompatibility

    To enrol in this course you must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Art History and Curatorship (BAHCR) and have completed 54 units of Art History (ARTH) courses, or with the permission of the convenor.
