• Offered by RS Electrical, Energy and Materials Engineering
  • ANU College ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science
  • Course subject Engineering

This course will only be offered from 2021

This course introduces the layered approach to data communications over wired and wireless networks. It provides students with both the principles and practical experience in using network protocols to generate, exchange and decode data packets between communication devices.

Specific topics include:
- layered protocol architecture, OSI and TCP/IP models, circuit and packet switching, data packets
and frames
- physical and data link layers for both wireline and wireless access technologies
- network layer addressing, routing and congestion control, IP
- transport layer quality of service control, TCP
- application layer functions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Apply the OSI model and TCP/IP model to describe and analyse wired and wireless networks.
  2. Evaluate the performance of real-world local and wide-area networks.
  3. Identify and differentiate the common access technologies and types of data networks.
  4. Design, implement and analyse network protocols meeting quality of service requirements.
  5. Program network protocols to enable reliable end-to-end data communication.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Assignments (20) [LO null]
  2. Labs (20) [LO null]
  3. Mid-term exam (20) [LO null]
  4. Final exam (40) [LO null]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.
