This course develops a critical understanding of diverse historiographical approaches in the discipline of history. It provides students with an in-depth appreciation of contemporary historiography in order to develop skills in both critical analysis and problem-based research design.  The course will be team-taught by the School of History in seminar format to promote a community of researchers and scholars. When possible, students will participate in the National Honours Workshop hosted by the Australian National University.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. analyse key issues in modern history;
  2. formulate and respond effectively to complex historical questions;
  3. identify and interpret primary and secondary source materials that can inform answers to those questions;
  4. construct sustained, structured, evidence-based arguments that address questions of historical enquiry; and
  5. present, discuss and evaluate historical research in oral form.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

260 hours of total student learning time comprising:


Either:

a) 36 contact hours over 12 weeks: 1 x 2-hour reading seminar and 1 x 1-hour workshop per week 

b) 224 hours completing assigned weekly readings, conducting research, and preparing for assessments.

a) 36 contact hours during the first 6 weeks of semester: 2 x 2-hour reading seminar and 2 x 1-hour workshop per week

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of Arts Honours (HARTS or HART2), Bachelor of European Studies Honours (HEURO) or Bachelor of Asian Studies Honours (HASIA), or completion of 144 units towards the Bachelor of Philosophy (Arts) (APHAR or APNAR). You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed HIST8024.

Preliminary Reading

Weekly readings will combine historical documents and recent scholarship to focus on a weekly theme.  An example would be:

  • Darwin, C., The Descent of Man [1871], in Watson (ed.), Darwin the Indelible Stamp (Philadelphia: Running Press, 2005), pp.732-60.
  • Spencer, H. ‘Progress: Its law and causes’, Westminster Review, 67 (April 1857).
