This course introduces students to modern spoken Korean and to its writing system, Hangeul. In Korean 1 students begin to develop basic listening and reading comprehension as well as oral and written Korean communication skills. Emphasis is placed upon learning to recognize, pronounce and write the Korean alphabet and its most common consonant clusters. Students also will have the opportunity to learn a range of common sentence patterns and read and write basic sentences which allow them to write and speak about a range of everyday situations. Conversational situations covered in the course include meeting and greeting, describing possessions, and making basic use of honorifics in conversation and writing.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Recognise and pronounce the basic consonants and vowel sounds of Korean.
- Read and write the Korean alphabet and its most common consonant clusters.
- Use an active vocabulary of around 400 items.
- Recognise and apply in conversation and writing a limited range of simple sentence structures and tenses for everyday situations.
- Communicate in speech and writing to introduce themselves and others, to ask and answer questions about such personal information as where they live, their acquaintances, and their possessions; make basic use of honorifics in conversation and writing.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of common socio-cultural activities such as self-introduction in the classroom and communicating with teachers and family members.
This is a co-taught course. The total number of students for both KORE1020 and KORE6120 is capped at 100 students for Semester 1 2020. The undergraduate version of the course KORE1020 is capped at 95 students and postgraduate version of the course KORE6120 is capped at 5 students.
On successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to engage at an Introductory level of Korean.
Students with native speaker proficiency (may include cognate languages and dialects) must review the placement test site and contact the CAP Student Centre for appropriate enrolment advice. Students with previous “language experience or exposure” are required to take a language placement test to ensure enrolment at the most appropriate level.
Relevant past experience includes:
- Previous study of the language (both formal and informal, for example but not limited to, at school, or, home, or through online activities, etc.)
- Being exposed to the language in childhood via a family member or friend
- Travel or living in a country where the language is spoken
- The language being spoken in your home (even if you do not speak it yourself)
Students who are not sure if they need to take a placement test should seek advice from the course or language convenor. Students who intentionally misrepresent their language proficiency level may be investigated under the Academic Misconduct Rule 2015 as having failed to comply with assessment directions and having sought unfair advantage. This may results in a penalty such as reduced grades or failure of the course.
Students are not permitted to enrol in a language course below one that they have already successfully completed, except with permission of the language and/or course convenor.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Five contact hours per week. Total workload for the course is 130 hours including independent study.
