This course will build students’ research skills and knowledge in the academic writing conventions of their target language, and provide students with analytical tools to critically evaluate a range of primary and secondary material. Critical discussion and analysis of scholarly writing from a range of intellectual traditions and perspectives will enable students to situate their research and methodological approach within a broader academic framework.

- Analyse and critically evaluate primary and secondary
materials in both English and the target language, and apply these in mapping
the argumentation of their own thesis.
- Evaluate knowledge of appropriate theories,
methodologies, or intellectual traditions in different languages, and relate
these to their own and other research.
- Outline their Honours research topic as an abstract and a poster presentation.
Indicative Assessment
Analysis of the written academic conventions of an article in the target language related to the student’s thesis: 500 words 10% (LO 1, 2)
Oral presentation + Written critique of an article or a series of articles in English (or with convener permission, of school research seminars and associated literature) related to the student’s thesis : 10 minutes 1500 words 25% (LO 2, 3)
Thesis abstract: 500 words 10% (LO 2, 4)
Poster of A3 size related to key components of the student’s thesis (argumentation, bibliography, research gap); includes first draft for peer review and poster presentation: 1000 words 40% (LO 2, 3, 4)
Two Peer-reviews of other students’ abstracts and draft posters: 500 words each for a total of 1000 words 7.5% each for a total of 15% (LO 2, 3)
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
