A first course in mathematical statistics with emphasis on applications; probability, random variables, moment generating functions and correlation, sampling distributions, estimation of parameters by the methods of moments and maximum likelihood, hypothesis testing, the central limit theorem, and bayesian statistics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Use and calculate probability including combinatorics
  2. Use and describe discrete, continuous and multivariate random variables and their probability distributions
  3. Define sampling distributions and use the central limit theorem
  4. Use the method of moments and maximum likelihood estimation
  5. Perform confidence estimation and hypothesis testing
  6. Use and describe the fundamental concepts of Bayesian statistics and Bayesian estimators

Indicative Assessment

Workload

Students are expected to commit at least 10 hours per week to completing the work in this course. This will include at least 3 contact hours per week and up to 7 hours of private study time.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed STAT1003 or STAT1008, and have either completed MATH1113, or MATH1115, or have completed or be concurrently enrolled in MATH1014. This course is incompatible with STAT2013.

Whilst enrollment without completing MATH1116 or concurrent enrollment with MATH1014 is possible, students are recommended to have completed MATH1113, MATH1116 or MATH1014 before this course if their program structure allows it.
