The Development Studies Honours Specialisation gives you high-level preparation for professional life or a higher degree by research through the development of an advanced knowledge of the research principles and methods and theoretical concepts of development studies, and through the design and implementation of a research project, typically a thesis of up to 20,000 words, that develops new understandings or that provides solutions to complex problems.

Learning Outcomes

  1. pose a significantresearch question relating to development studies;
  2. investigate thisquestion creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, includingthrough sophisticated use of theory and methodology as appropriateto development studies, and place these investigations in the context of therelevant intellectual tradition; and
  3. communicate theirresearch and its findings through an appropriate medium.

This Honours specialisation requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

24 units from the completion of the following course(s):

12 - 24 units from the completion of the following:

SOCY4010 - Sociology Honours Methods Seminar (12 units)

SOCY4009 - Sociology Honours Theory Seminar (12 units)

ANTH4011 - History of Anthropological Theory Extended (12 units)

ANTH4012 - Theory and Ethnography in the Analysis of Cultures (12 units)

POLS4011 - Research Training: Scope and Methods (12 units)

A maximum of 12 units from the completion of the following list:
